While on a journey, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to shorten the prayer (sometimes) and offer it completely (sometimes). Similarly, he used to observe fast (sometimes) and break it (sometimes).
وَعَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اَللَّهُ عَنْهَا;
«أَنَّ اَلنَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَقْصُرُ فِي اَلسَّفَرِ وَيُتِمُّ، وَيَصُومُ وَيُفْطِرُ»

رواه الدارقطني (2/44/189)، والبيهقي (3/141) من طريق سعيد بن محمد بن ثواب، حدثنا أبو عاصم، حدثنا عمرو بن سعيد، عن عطاء بن أبي رباح، عن عائشة به. وقال الدارقطني: «وهذا إسناد صحيح». قلت: وهو كما قال، فرجاله كلهم ثقات، وابن ثواب، أدخله ابن حبان في: «الثقات» (8/272)، وقال: «مستقيم الحديث». ومع هذا فهو معلول كما قال الحافظ بل قال ابن القيم في «الزاد» (1/464-465): «لا يصح، وسمعت شيخ الإسلام ابن تيمية يقول: هو كذب على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم»
