“On the day in which the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) entered Al-Madinah, everything in it was illuminated. Then, on the day in which he died, everything in it was dark. And we did not remove our hands from the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), while we were burying him because our hearts felt so estranged.”

Enes b. Mâlik (r.a.)’den rivâyete göre, şöyle demiştir: “Rasûlullah (s.a.v.)’in Medîne’ye geldikleri gün Medîne’nin her yeri aydınlanmış ve nurlanmıştı. Vefat ettiği gün ise her taraf karanlıklar içerisinde kalmıştı. Defnedeceğimiz zaman ellerimizden toprağa bıraktık, kalblerimizi tanıyamaz olduk.” Diğer tahric: İbn Mâce, Cenaiz Tirmizî: Bu hadis garib sahihtir

The note in this edition

What it means

Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) explains that when the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) entered Madīnah as an immigrant from Makkah, everything in Madīnah started shining with light. When he died, everything started getting dark therein. The light and darkness are metaphorical. When the Companions were done burying the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) they did not find their hearts in the same state which they had experienced during the Prophet's life.

The light, compassion, and amicability receded because the divine revelation had stopped, and they were no longer blessed with the Prophet's Companionship.
