He heard Aishah, the wife of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) (way peace be upon him), as saying: When there was on any day windstorm or dark cloud (its effects) could be read on the face of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and he moved forward and backward (in a state of anxiety); and when it rained, he was delighted and it (the state of restlessness) disappeared.

Aishah said: I asked him the reason of this anxiety and he said: I was afraid that it might be a calamity that might fall upon my Ummah, and when he saw rainfall he said: It is the mercy (of Allah).

Bize Abd b. Humeyd rivayet etti.

What it means

‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) informed that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) did not exaggerate in laughing until his uvula, which is the fleshy extension hanging above the throat, could be seen; rather, he would only smile.

What it teaches

  • The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to smile rather than laugh as an expression of pleasure or admiration.
  • Ibn Hajar said: I have never seen him laughing so heartily in such a way that he would be fully laughing and totally indulged in laughter.
  • Excessive laughter and loud giggling are not among the qualities of the righteous.
  • Excessive laughter damages one's prestige and respect among his fellows.
