Sad ibn Abi Waqqas was in the fold of his camels that his son Umar came to him. When Sad saw him he said: I seek refuge with Allah from the mischief of this rider. And as he got down he said to him: You are busy with your camels and your sheep and you have abandoned people who are contending with one another for kingdom.

Sad struck his chest and said: Keep quite. I heard the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) as saying: Allah loves the servant who is God-conscious and is free from want and is hidden (from the view of people).

What it means

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) pointed out that Allah Almighty loves some of His servants, including the pious: those who fulfill Allah's commands and avoid His prohibitions. And He loves those free from wants: those who dispense with people and only resort to Allah Almighty and turn to none but Him. And He loves the inconspicuous: those who are modest and worship their Lord and only concern themselves with what benefits them, and they do not care about being recognized or praised by others.

What it teaches

  • The Hadīth highlights some qualities that entail Allah’s love for His servants, namely fear of Allah, humility, and contentment with what is predestined and given by Allah.
