The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: Angels do not enter the house in which there is a picture or portraits. I came to Aishah and said to her: This is a news that I have received that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had said: Angels do not enter the house in which there is a picture or a dog, (and further added) whether she had heard the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) making a mention of it.

She said: No (I did not hear this myself), but I narrate to you what I saw him doing. I bear testimony to the fact that he (the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)) set out for an expedition. I took a carpet and screened the door with it. When he (the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)) came back he saw that carpet and I perceived signs of disapproval on his face.

He pulled it until it was torn or it was cut (into pieces) and he said: God has not commanded us to clothe stones and clay. We cut it (the curtain) and prepared two pillowa out of it by stuffing them with the fibre of date-palms and he (the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)) did not find fault with it.

Bana Said b. Yahya El-Emevî rivayet etti. (Dediki) Bana babam rivayet etti.

What it means

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) entered the place of 'Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) in his house and found that she had covered a small cabinet, wherein things are kept with a piece of fabric that had images of living beings on it. The color of his face changed by way of anger for the sake of Allah, and he took it away and said: People who will receive the severest punishment on the Day of Judgment will be those who try to emulate Allah's creation with their images. ‘Ā’ishah said: So, we made one or two cushions out of it.

What it teaches

  • Forbidding evil on seeing it without any slackness unless it involves a greater evil.
  • Punishment on the Day of Judgment varies according to the gravity of the sin.
  • Making images of living beings counts as one of the major sins.
  • One of the rationales behind the prohibition of image-making is the imitation of Allah's creation, whether the image-maker has intended it or not.
  • The Shariah is keen on protecting properties by making use of them after removing what is prohibited therein.
  • It is forbidden to make images of living beings in any form, even if they are treated with disrespect.
