He heard the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) (way peace be upon him) as saying: He who among you can protect himself against Fire, he should do so, even if it should be with half a date.

Bize Yahya b. Yahya rivayet etti. (Dediki): Bize Huşeym Abdül melik b. Umeyr'den, o da Câbir b. Semura'dan naklen haber verdi ki, Kufeliler Sa'd'ı Ömerü'bnü'l-Hattâb'a şikâyet ederek namazından söz etmişler. Ömer de ona haber göndermiş. Sâ'd gelmiş, Ömer ona Kufelilerin namaz meselesinden dolayı kendisini ta'yîb ettiklerini söylemiş, Sâ'd: «Ben onlara Resulullah (Sallallahu Aleyhi ve Sellem)'in namazını kıldırıyorum, ondan hiç bir şey eksiltmiyorum, ilk iki rek'âti onlara, uzunca tutuyorum; son iki rek'âtta ise kısa kesiyorum.» demiş. Bunun üzerine Ömer: «Senden zâten bu beklenir. Yâ Ebâ İshâk!» demiş

What it means

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informs that every believer will stand alone before Allah on the Day of Resurrection and that Allah Almighty will speak to him without an intermediary or interpreter between them to translate the words. He will look to the right and left out of extreme fear, hoping that he will find a way in which he can go and attain salvation from the Hellfire that lies in front of him.

If he looks to the right side, he will see nothing but the good deeds he has sent forth. If he looks to his left, he will see nothing but the bad deeds he has sent forth. And if he looks ahead of him, he will see nothing but Hellfire and cannot turn away from it, as he must pass over the Sirāt (a bridge over Hellfire). Then, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: Put a shield between yourselves and the Hellfire by charity and pious acts, even if it is something little, like half a date.

What it teaches

  • The Hadīth urges giving out charity, adopting praisworthy traits, treating people gently, and speaking tenderly.
  • It indicates Allah's closeness to His servant on the Day of Judgment since there is neither a barrier, an intermediary, nor a translator between them. So, a believer should beware of violating the command of his Lord.
  • A believer should not underestimate anything he gives out in charity, even if it is little, for it grants protection against Hellfire.
