Ali ibn Abu Talib said: “The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) took hold of some silk in his left hand and some gold in his right, then he raised his hands and said: ‘These two are forbidden for the males of my nation, and permitted to the females.’”

What it means

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) took a silk garment or a piece of it in his left hand and took gold, jewelry or something similar, in his right hand. Then, he said: Silk and gold are forbidden for men to wear. As for women, they are permissible for them.

What it teaches

  • As-Sindi said: 'Forbidden' refers to its use as a garment. Otherwise, it is permissible for everyone to use it in terms of disposal, spending, and selling. Moreover, it is forbidden for everyone to make utensils of gold and use them.
  • The Islamic Shariah provides broad space for women due to their need for adornment and the like.
