‘A man who had drunk wine was brought to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and he commanded that the man should be beaten (lashed). The man was given about forty lashes with two palm branches. Anas added, Abu Bakr (RAA) did the same, but when Umar (RAA) became the Caliph, he consulted the people and Abdur Rahman ibn Auf said, ‘The mildest punishment for drinking is eighty (lashes).’ So, Umar (RAA) gave his commands accordingly. Agreed upon.’
